In my blog, I am trying various color schemes to expand my painting vocabulary. To that end, I am selecting a different color scheme/limited palette each week and basing three little 8 x 6 or 10 x 8 paintings upon that color palette. If you have any suggestions of color palettes I should try, please email me at nanvenhuizen@gmail.com. ( I’d love to have a comment section on this page, but I haven’t yet figured out how to do that!)
I love Cerulean Blue! It is the color of clear, lovely skies and shimmering water! I also really like it when mixed with yellow to make the bright green that is the color of grass lit by sunshine. In the following paintings, I used Cerulean blue and yellow to portray the sunlit grass-and to portray the sunlit grass or leaves in each painting. Also I, of course, used it to portray the bright green cab of the nursery pickup!

Blue and purple are a moody combination! These three paintings were done primarily with Titanium White, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue with a small amount of Cerulean Blue and Yellow Ochre.

These three paintings were completed with basically three colors-Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White and Ivory Black. I used a small amount of Cadmium Orange to brighten the Crimson and for the grass. I like color-so this was a pretty limiting palette-yet very effective to express the feeling of a gray winter day!!

Autumn is, admittedly, my favorite season-I love the lovely yellow-orange trees which start out against the clear Cerulean Blue skies! For these autumn paintings, I primarily used these colors-
Cerulean Blue
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Yellow
With smaller amounts of these colors-
Burnt Siennna
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium Red
And -of course-
Titanium White
