Primary Barns

As I’m sure that you all know, the primary colors are yellow, blue and red and those are the colors that I used for these paintings.  One might rightly argue that using yellow, blue and red are like using all the colors since every color can be mixed from these three primaries.  For these paintings, however, I applied only the three primary colors to the canvas and did not mix any secondary colors.  There was a bit of mixing on the canvas(hence a little green), but the color scheme remains a primary one.

I chose to paint barns, as they add a nice bright red to the canvas. (Also, possibly, because I have a fondness for barns due to the hours I spent reading and playing with kittens in the haymow of our barn as a child!)

The pigments I used for these paintings were-

Cadmium Yellow

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Ultramarine Blue

Cerulean Blue

White

Christmas Colors in Spring Time!

In my blog, I am trying various color schemes to expand my painting vocabulary.  To that end, I am selecting a different color scheme/limited palette each week and basing three little 8 x 6 paintings upon that color palette.  If you have any suggestions of color palettes I should try, please email me at nvenhuizen@gmail.com. ( I’d love to have a comment section on this page, but I haven’t yet figured out how to do that!)

Red and green together often remind me of Christmas, but actually there are a fair amount of red and green scenes around in the spring as well.  In rural South Dakota there are a plethora of old red barns, that are surrounded by the complementary greens of spring trees.  Also, there are lots of red flowers and blossoming red trees.  I used these colors for the following paintings:

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow

Ultramarine Blue

As a child-when asked- I always said that my favorite colors were yellow and orange.  I’m not sure that has changed- as it is hard to imagine a brighter, happier combination!  This week I did three painting with that combination.  I, of course used yellow and orange-but also used Dioxazine Purple(yellow’s complement) and Ultramarine Blue (orange’s complement).   I used each color’s complement to make the darker, shadowed areas of that color in each of the paintings.  The colors I used for these paintings are-

Lemon Yellow

Dioxazine Purple

Cadmium Orange

Ultramarine Blue

Titanium White
